Is there a choice when closing split window

Sometimes after I am done with using the split window I would like to close and return to the single pane. It seems that it is always the window on the right that closes when using the button on the bottom.

Is there a way to tell the program to close the left window instead. I tried option clicking the button. Perhaps that could be an option in future if it doesn't already exist?
