Moderator edit: this is irrelevant starting from Path Finder 4.8.2
---------------------------

In the screenshots of PF 4.8, the background color of the shelf is the purply-bluish color that's being used in iTunes, iPhoto, the Leopard Finder, etc.

However, for me, the background of the shelf in 4.8 is white, and right off I'm not finding any way to change that.

How does one achieve this newish look? Thanks!

Aha, I knew this one will come :)

Well those screenshots are from my setup. To achieve it do the following:

1. Open View -> Color Options and set your "Background color" to light blue (e.g. the color you would like your Shelf to be)
2. Now go to View -> View Options (or Cmd-J) and click on "Set Colors" and uncheck "Use default color"

You'll have to repeat step 2 for all three views (Icon, Column and List). You will have a side effect of this setup - your drawer's background color will be light blue also.

Now I agree that this is super far from being intuitive and the result is also far from being perfect. Our whole Color Options system ahem... sucks :) We know about that and plan to make it more simple to use in a future release.

Thanks Sasha!

And yeah... the color options could use a bit of work. :)

I love the new easy "Blue Background" option for the shelf in 4.8.1!! Thank you!

When I play with color options, the text color of the shelf is changing, but I can't get its background color to change even if I have the background color property changed. I'm trying to make every background color red, and I've set that as the background color in both color options and view options, and have tried toggling the use defaults option, and nothing. The shelf background color won't change.

Help! :)

After lots of popular requests we hacked our (rather messed up) color system to make the Shelf either blue or white (because everyone wanted blue). The result is that from version 4.8.1 you can have the Shelf either blue or white, sorry about that.

No worries. You responded to user feedback. That's great!

You could change the shelf background to any color you desired in previous versions like (4.6.1 [363]). ;--)
