Here is a arrangement of PathFinder that I am finding very productive & attractive too... The only fixes needed to make this permanent are...

First: That you'll notice that the black text on the black background does not show up (by selecting all the highlight color will then display file names or by temporarily changing the background color), this has be noted in the forums before... I'm open to any suggestions on overwriting the color of the font w/ 3rd party apps or system/PF hacks...

Second: Occasional screen glitches/flickers within the back/transparent area (1 -2 x's an hour)... But, hey I'm pushing the 867 G4 Quicksilver's graphics amenities fairly hard.

Further refinement will involve Icon tweaks & a more through setup of shelf and pane areas. With the filename dilemma, it still seems to be more productive in moving/organizing & quickly locating files & apps than the finder (ever could be).

Running Apps:
PathFinder - Overflow - Konfabulator - Butler - Menuet - Salling Clicker
I used UNO to theme OSX and would like to have used ShapeShifter for more of a variety and ease of switching but, APE is O'too-common in my error logs & will crash WOW persistently.

For your first problem, when you're on your desktop, hit Command-J, or go to the View Menu and select View Options, then uncheck "Show File Names".

Here is my version of PF:

On the far left is my main shelf for things I need all the time. Just in from that on the bottom is my second shelf that has all current projects, generic icons right now because the external drive that has those folders is not plugged in.

In the middle I have icon view as usual, on the right I have Previews on the bottom, very handy and it even shows previews of Illustrator files. Above that I usual have Info but sometimes use Processes.

That's my granddaughter in the preview
