When I'm renaming a group of files, half of the time when I type the new name, hit enter to make it official, hit tab to move on to the next one, hit enter again to enable re-name, the highlighting bounces back to the file I just renamed. I have to hit enter again, then tab again, then enter again to rename the second file. What causes this, and can it be stopped?

On a related note, tabbing from file to file seems pretty finicky. More often than not, hitting tab will always set focus on some apparently random file, and no matter what other file I manually select, tab returns to that same file again and again.

And on another related note, when tabbing is working, it seems as if Path Finder is keeping track of old names. i.e. if I've got the files snapz 001 through snapz 010 in with a bunch of other files "m renaming, if I rename the first five, then press "s" it selects the file that was snapz001 instead of snapz006, which is now the first file starting with "s". If I close the window, then open a new one to the same folder, it usually works OK.

I'm sorting out a bunch of files on my other mac, over my lan. I had just finished moving a bunch of stuff from folder b to folder a, leaving folder b empty. I highlighted folder b & hit cmd-backspace. Since it's on a different computer, I got the "The item "folder b" could not be moved to the trash. Would you like to delete it immediately?"

However, just as (or fractionally before) I hit cmd-backspace, the highlighting jumped from folder b to folder a. I saw that, and hit the esc key, at which point Path Finder went ahead and deleted folder a, leaving folder b alone.

That's a couple hundred pictures gone, and it raises the moving highlight problem from a petty annoyance to a real problem.

Why can't Path Finder move something on a different computer into the trash on that computer?

Is it because it's trying to move it to the trash on this computer? If so, I suggest it be changed so if I use cmd-backspace on a file on a hard drive on a different computer, it move that file (or folder) to that drive's trash instead of instantly erasing it.

Or is it some kind of underlying OS bug? If so, can it be worked around?

Man, that totally sucks. I'm sorry for the data loss.

To answer your question, Path Finder works in a similar way to how the Finder works. I don't completely understand the full technical components of this, but it's mainly because a) you have no idea if the machine you're connected to even has a trash to begin with, b) even if you do, there's no context to where you are on the system - what trash does it get moved to, for exmaple?

The main issue here is one of where exactly does Path Finder (or the Finder) move the files to? The only system that PF knows *for sure* where the trash is and which trash is "correct" is on the local system, and you sure as heck do not want to be pulling the files over the network just to trash them locally.

I'm really sorry about this, but I think Path Finder handles this problem about as well as it can, given the information it has to work with.

I'm still kind of hung up on the highlight jumping around. This problem has been around for a while.

Having Path Finder delete the (wrongly) selected folder despite hitting esc to cancel is also a hang-up.
