View Full Version : Thank you! Path Finder rocks!

As scribbled somewhere else, my vision is 20/310. The US government says this means I have no practical vision and am essentially blind. With its unchangable and tiny fonts, you'd think sometimes that Apple agreed.
Besides generally being a frustrating application, Finder was too small. Icon captions could be made big enough to read with a little effort (16 point), but most fonts simply were whatever Apple had decided to make them. You couldn't change them. Add to that keyboard controls which were at best incomplete and strange. Now consider the need to fight with seperate applications to view a screenshot or to play a sound and you have a really annoying file manager, more so if you can't read it!
Here comes Path Finder. I tried this thing out once before under Jaguar, but it really didn't integrate well, it was slow, and sorry Steve, the evaluation timer was just annoying. It just felt like it was trying to do too much.
It was only because a friend suggested I really give the current version another shot. It didn't crawl on my Powerbook anymore, and it flies on anything wall-powered of similar specs. It gave me fine-grained control of the browser fonts, it doesn't drop or use .DS_Store files, and I've only managed to crash it once. That's pretty impressive overall.
I use it mostly with a keyboard and have mostly configured it the way I want it. There are still a couple of things I'd be much happier if I had, but I get the impression that many of them are coming from this forum. Sometime today, I will be registering this fine application and I will at long last be able to throw Finder away for good.
Thank you for treating me like an adult and giving me a program that can actually be used to accomplish something useful. Moreover, thank you for making Path Finder an application even a blind guy can use. (Now go make the currently unchangable fonts changable, eh? :D)

MacNN has pblished details of a potential security hazard whereby a trojan application with, say, a .mp3 file extension and icon can actually be a double clickable application with OS9-style file type of .APPL. It looks like an mp3 file and may include mp3 content to sound like one, But if you double click it your Finder launches it and executes whatever malignant code it contains before launching iTunes to play itself.
So what? Well, I use Pathfinder all the time now, and I use its list view, which segregates apps from folders and files. I downloaded the "proof of concept" virus.mp3 file linked by MacNN and expanded it. And it appeared in the apps segment of my download directory listing - a dead giveaway.
Chalk up another hit for Pathfinder. It's also a trojan unmasker. :D

Long ago, I suggested that you just tap into the Finder's Find File, since it was much better than Path Finder's. Now, with 3.2, I see you've finally fixed it, but instead you gave us a Find File which looks like it is *better* than the Finder's. Thank you.
If it works as good as it looks, and if Path Finder 3.2 will not often crash when connecting to servers like 3.1 did, I can finally do that "quit Finder when Path Finder launches" option.

Just a "wow" on the built-in CD-burning capacity. I've always used Toast, but lately Toast won't load and won't exit, so I had to try the built-in capacity. Wow, that's fast. I am quite impressed, and just wonder how fast it'd be on something newer/faster than my 500 MHz Pismo & 16x burner.

All I can currently say because I'm speechless and in awe is:
Apple, make these guys really rich and incorporate this into your OS.

No matter what anyone says about the long wait - it was worth it! What a beautiful job. Thanks guys!

Congrats guys!

Honestly, my hopes were so high for this update that I had this nervous sinking feeling in anticipation of what I presumed would be inevitable disappointment. But I am absolutely blown away. Bravo. Well done.

On another note, though I haven't had a chance to use PF4 properly, I LOVE the new graphic identity. The compass works much better than the old signposts.

Very nice job, guys.
PF4 is simply impressive. Wonderful features, great customization, smooth performance...
The Select command is a gem.
The History shelf is a touch of genius.
There are some minor bugs, annoyances and omissions (the worst of them is the lack of an undo function to file operations), but all in all PF4 is a truly masterpiece.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Also, I'd like to express my pleasure and gratitude that network copy times are greatly improved in PF4--PF3 was often struggling to get up to half of the Finder's throughput, and PF4 seems to have no problem achieving comparable rates to the Finder's. Good job!

i second that! PF 3 copied at about 5 MB/s, which is about half what one would expect in a 100 MBit network, and about 10 times less than what i get in a gigabit network. for this reason, i always used the Finder for network copies, but no more! PF 4 fixed this. thank you! :D
there's more copy related stuff that could be done (like smart queues - i think i've sent an email about that a year or longer ago) - but at this time i guess there are more important matters... :)
cheers, oliver
about a day later and this software simply ROCKS my workflow...
PF is a definite purchase next week.
OMG i just tried drop area for the first time... NICE.
Its also, fast, tight and has a great clean interface.
i do not use haxies for the reasons others have found out the hard way.
I am running you control and launchbar on 10.4.2 and so far no problems.

Rarely do I take the opportunity to wax complimentary about a software program in its own forums, but in this case I think I have to say;
PathFinder 4 kicks butt.
It's better than Christmas. It's better than I'd dared hope. Everything I wanted to change about v3 has been changed. I panicked for a moment when I couldn't find the Preview pane, and then I fainted with joy when I did. The sidebars finally work the way I want them to, and most important of all, the program's overall polish is remarkable. It just looks so gosh darn good. I always felt a little standoffish about v3 even though I used it every day, but I wholeheartedly rejoice at how marvelous v4 is.
Never stop, guys. Great work. I'd pay for a new license key if I had to. Of course, that's not to say I don't want you to turn down my request for a key update. ;)

Just want to say 'Thank you' for the wonderful application that PF4 is. It runs brilliantly on my Powerbook and and the feature-set is nothing short of amazing! Apart from a few 'cosmetics' things I'd like to see addressed (and which have already been mentioned in other threads) it's near-perfect for me as well as fast and very stable. Once again, thank you!

I agree with everything said by shuuki. These guys did it all.
Most importantly, the several bugs which I reported over the last 18 months were apparently logged and the ones that I can remember reporting HAVE BEEN FIXED. Cocoatech is RESPONSIBLE. Performance problems that arose with Tiger are fixed. The Path-Finder-private "shelf" is gone and now it's all synchronized with Finder's Favorites. Wonderful. The new features, which I had not even though of, in particular the customizable drawers, are fabulous. I've got Favorites, Volumes, Folder History, Info and Preview all showing. In my list view I see Name, Date Modified, Size, Owner, Group and Permissions. And of course, that wonderful old PATH bar, with a new look! If I had to choose between Cocoatech's upgrade from Path Finder 3 to Path Finder 4, and Apple's upgrade from Mac OS X 10.3 to 10.4, I'd take Path Finder 4. Path Finder 4 is better than Tiger.

The new size browser in 4.1 is sweet.
Just like Omni DiskSweeper with some extra features. Yet another "must have" app that has been replaced by Path Finder.
No support needed, just wanted to say thanks.

As an Apple convert for about 2 years now, and a person who still has to use Windows during the day, my biggest loss in OSX dealt with missing file navigation features.
When I first read about PathFinder I was excited but skeptical about the operation and stability if a product like this.
The point? Without the 21 day trial I would most likely have never purchased Path Finder. But after using it for a few weeks I've come to find that I can't live without it.
Happy to be a new licensed user. :D
Thanks for the trial and the great product.

Just downloaded the 4.5 update.
The reload function is just what I have been waiting for - sure beats having to "touch" everytime I want to view the contents on a NAS Drive.
This is easily the best and most used piece of software on my Mac - THANKS!

I'd just like to say that I love the swooping fly-away effect when I trash something with Cmd-Delete. (I think it shows up in other places too.) This is undoubtedly one of the "superfluous visual effects" that one can disable in Preferences, but it's the kind of thing that makes the Macintosh experience so great. Whoever designed it: thanks!

You can use the Drop Stack to do this - just keep dragging files / folders into the Drop Stack and when you're ready, click the Drop Stack's title bar for a list of options that include compress and burn.
I didn't know that, that is very cool. Especially the compress and email feature.
There are so many little things PF can do I bet it will take years to discover them all. I had been enjoying how much easier it is to change a file name than in Finder. Seems like I have to click on it a dozen times in Finder before hitting it just right to highlight the name, but one simple click in PF and it's instantly highlighted, and without highlighting the app extension.
Now I just discovered hitting Enter makes it even easier, I didn't know that was there. Is there a manual somewhere I can't seem to find one.
And the new multiple shelves feature in 4.5 is great. I used to have Recent Folders in the drawer to the left but now I have a shelf of current work folders while keeping the main folder in the old position with my permanent folders.

I just found out about PF three days ago. I think I waited almost a whole day before breaking down and buying it. I waited another day before calling my few friends who use Macs, demanding that they try it.
There were times, esp using Finder, that I really didn't like my Mac. THANK YOU for providing something that makes my system rock the house!

....... this program just keeps getting better and better with every update?! Ya, I know that that is the reason why people update their program, but still - every time I update Pathfinder I always find amazing new features! Most other programs you just think - "ya whatever" when they are updated......
So good job guys! Now - if I could only get that "command-option i" floating info-window then I couldn't possibly think of any other features I would need - except, I'm sure - the developers will show me in future updates anyway... :)
Sorry for the spam...

Just a head ups. After auditioning PF a long time ago, I ran into some serious problems with it on my system running with the Finder, I gave up on the idea since it wasn't working in the way i wished. I recently began using PF 4.72 again with some initial teething issues. Of course after reading further here i intended to replace the Finder with PF. Sadly, the trial period ran out so i used a pir8'd (yeah yeah im naughty..kill me -) number for continued testing until i could get home where i had my system (pre Path Finder backed up to another disk. I was anticipating replacing Finder with PF but not until i had my back up clone on hand in case of disaster.
Anyways, I made it home after some weeks. I finally managed to eagerly perform the the method of completely replacing the Finder in CoreServices with Path Finder via the rename/alter package contents to "FNDRMACS" details found on this forum, ( although I decided to log in as root to perform this rather than follow the instructions). Man oh man, all the issues i had previously (when Finder was in CoreServices and i used PF on Launch and instantly Quit Finder) where "reveal in Finder/Show in Finder" failed to work now works perfectly with the replacement. Altho i had a few crashes which have since been resolved (BlueHarvest being the perpetrator ) and a few minor minor issues (as posted in forums here) everything else works absolutely perfectly. Im not often thrilled by software since im extremely over particular, but i must say PF has highly impressed me. as does OmniWeb. After reading the Cocotech website thru an thru an since learning a core developer programs this app, I still have difficulty coming to terms with the fact that this application does not have a team of developers. Apple should be extremely embarrassed to think one man's software puts the entire Finder team at Apple to shame in the abomination of software they call Finder.
So impressed by this, i was anxious and excited to buy a license for PF at the weekend. To my amazement im flawed at how little this application is selling for. Id not have objected to drop a hundred or so on Path Finder for the privilege to use it. Seriously this is undervalued IMO.
Finally huge respect for the man of this application and of course his team who design run and support the web site, the forum an other particulars of affiliated with the project including the forums support ninja's.Thanks so much for this perfect File Browser. Im please my money is well spent.
Best

thank you cocoatech for your stellar leopard update. you have done a simply excellent job.
quicklook integration is just wonderful and all of the leopard issues seem to have been resolved!
my only request for the future is to implement the coverflow view, perhaps (in usual pathfinder style), affording even more functionality than in the finder coverflow!

This is an extraordinary maintenance release. You fixed *all* the bugs, and several annoyances, that affected me. I am now a blissfully happy Leopard/PF user.
And that list of issues was huge... I know Leopard probably broke your lives for a few weeks... I'm very grateful.

I spent three weeks with the demo and loved Pathfinder. When it expired, I thought "meh, it was fun but I can live without it." I was feeling poor and, heck, I'd spent how many years with the regular Finder? Lots. And it'd worked just fine in all that time.
I spent two weeks in the old Finder, trying to forget Pathfinder. It didn't work. I just bought my license and I'm thrilled to have Pathfinder back.
Thanks for all the hard work. It's appreciated.
Cheers.

...that you can modify the default keyboard shortcuts!!!
Wow. Great feature, thanks a million for this. I'd been having the hardest time remembering PF's keyboard shortcut for switching between tabs. The default Firefox keychord is stuck in my brain and I thought, "how swell if the keychords could be the same." Well, now they are.
I've also just started using the "Go To Folder" command. Being able to combine "arrowing" through your directory with text input is great.
This is a really sharp tool

Hey - I just wanted to say thank you for all the work you've done on pathfinder... I started using it when I couldn't control my blood pressure over those annoying .ds_store files, and since then it's like one wonderful discovery after another - tabs, the drop-down terminal, and being able to customize the godzilla out of it.
Even the drop box helped with my transition to a mac, but I the new double pane in pf5 just makes me jump up and down with joy (which can get kind of embarrassing working in a bank) - and after feeling initially lost without atlap's salamander, it almost makes me want to cry with happiness, but, then I remember that might ruin my macho image... they think that's weird over here in london.
Anyways, thanks. I appreciate immensely.
