PF4 certainly has the looks, but I'm missing a couple of features I used heavily:

Disclosure triangles in column view - these made PF (3) so much more powerful than the Finder.

Ability to scroll left all the way back to "Computer" in column view - worked bautifully with the Mighty Mouse. Clicking the Path Navigator or using the keyboard to go up the hierarchy just isn't as easy.
Other posts mentioned the loss of this too, with regard to using the left arrow.

So, whatever happened to these?
I also wonder what else has been stripped - no mention in the "what's new" section of stuff that was removed.

Maybe I need to get used to a "new" way of doing things, but PF4 feels like a step back right now. Still a lot better than the Finder though, so I'll try it for a while...

The disclosure triangles in column view is definitely missing (and missed). It's on our list of things to add back into the application, but because of the huge code change it was pushed down in priority for the 4.0 release. But if it's still possible to do (it was a massive hack in the previous versions) we'll do it.

The horizontal scroll might take a bit longer. It seems like it would be an easy thing to fix, but the way that OS X now handles column view in Cocoa makes it much harder than you would expect. We don't disable stuff to be malicious - it's often to work around or deal with an OS issue.

The problem is that in column view, OS X keeps every single column in the hierarchy "open" and in memory, so if you have tons of items and are very deep in the hard drive, the memory usage can be huge.

But, like I said, I'll see what Steve can do. Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply!

It's good to read some background on the choices made - I quite understand holding back on the "massive hack" and other work arounds. I like PF4 better already!

Although these few things are missing, I see quite a few improvements too so I don't want to revert to PF3. Guess the step back is easily compensated after all.

Thanks for a fine product and kudos to you and Steve for creating it!

cheers

Hey Neilio,

One [missing?] feature that I've always used and I haven't been able to find a replacement or similar feature yet is the "Custom" shelf feature, where you could create a shelf and basically add all the dirs, files, applications that you wanted there.

Not sure if it's there, and I haven't seen it, but some enlightenment would be appreciated.

P.S.: Great work by both Steve and yourself.

I noticed this too...as I'm sure we all have.
Disclosure triangles in column view is, for me,
the single most valuable feature of Pathfinder 3.
