View Full Version : PF 3.2.2 quits on launch

I've just upgraded to PF 3.2.2.

Although I don't have StuffIt 9 installed in my system, I followed Cocoatech's advice (posted on Version Tracker) that "all PF 3 users must upgrade..."

Now PF bounce two or three times in the dock and then quits (or, more accurate: it doesn't launch).

I trashed the application preferences, restarted the computer, to no avail.

Did anyone else have this problem?

Do you have Stuffit expander installed on your computer? It's a standard part of the OS install.

Path Finder requires this to launch. If you've removed it from your system (or skipped the install completely) I can post Path Finder 3.2.1 back up for you to download.

Sorry - the release notes should have been more clear. I'll update them to include this information.

Thanks for the answer, Neil.

Yes, I have StuffIt Expander 8 in my system. It's not in the default Applications folder, though. In fact, almost none of my applications is, neither Path Finder. I leave the Applications folder only with Apple apps or with those programs that require to be stored there; the others goes to subfolders of the Applications folder, named "Internet", "Coding", etc.)

But this seems not to be the cause of the problem, because I temporarily move Path Finder and StuffIt Expander to the Applications folder and got no success. I also ran Disk Utility to perform permission repairs, to no avail.

I am seriously considering to accept your PF 3.2.1 offer! :)

Actually, it's not the physical location of the Stuffit application - it's the framework we're looking for.

Look under /System/Frameworks - there should be a folder there called "Stuffit.framework". If not, that means that somehow the Stuffit framework was deleted from your computer.

If that's the case, all you need to do is re-install Stuffit Expander. I would actually recommend Stuffit 9 (ironically enough) as the framework for Stuffit 9 was completely re-written and is much faster. It loads faster, too, which means that Path Finder will launch a bit faster if Stuffit 9 is installed.

Thanks, Neil.

Now Path Finder is back to normal, although some confusion arose.

When you said "/System/Frameworks folder", I thought you meant "/System/Library/Frameworks". I looked for the StuffIt Framework in my /System/Library/Frameworks folder and didn't find it. So I went to Allume's website and downloaded StuffIt Expander 9.

But after StuffIt installation I eventually found the "StuffIt Framework" file in /Library/Frameworks (not the /System/Library/Frameworks folder). Then I realized that when you said "/System/Frameworks/" you really meant "/Library/Frameworks/".

This was not a big problem (because, as I said, PF is now working), but I (or we) will never be able to know whether I had or not the StuffIt Framework installed when PF refused to launch. This information could help you guys to pinpoint a solution in similar cases, where users upgrade to PF 3.2.2 but not to StuffIt 9.

But thanks anyway for helping.

Darn. Sorry - typing / thinking fast isn't my strong point. :)

Yes, I meant /Library/Frameworks. Glad you got it working, though.
