I think it's great you're adding this into the mix.
What I would love to see is the existing capture dialog become a preference pane, and within that pane, provide for three things:
1. Selection of the saved file type (PDF, JPEG, TIF would be a good start)
1a. Save thumbnails with the files (like Photoshop)
2. Assignment of the hot keys for each type of screen
3. Selection of the save location.
This is really all I would ever need.
I really like how the actual keystrokes and screenshot types work in OS X. What bugs me no end is the format and the fact that the icons produced from screens are all generic PDF. And tools like Snapz are way too complicated IMO; why launch a separate app just to take screenshots? For screenshot movies, that's one thing, but not stills.
With existing tools, users have to think about how they're going to set up a screenshot. However, the idea should be to spend as little time on such things as possible IMO. I just want to select the file format, the keystroke and where it ends up... once. From then on, we should be able to use the normal "full screen", "window only", and "selection only" keystrokes to get the shots as quickly as possible.
No dialogs that pop up, no settings to think about... just set it up once (or once per project) and away you go. :D
