After using Path Finder's column browser, the standard file dialog used by other programs seems ... positively crappy. Is it possible to insert something based on Path Finder's browser in place to get used? (I don't understand MacOS X development enough to know how you'd do this or if you can even, which is why I ask..)
Not exactly sure how to make it work either, but if it's possible I figure that others might have all kinds of complaints which you might be able to address. :D

Somehow, I have a feeling this is a fairly impossible request, as I don't believe there's any real way (besides resorting to a haxie) to patch how the OS addresses things like the save / open file dialog windows.
I wish we could, though.... but I think we should work on making Path Finder the best file browser first before we start thinking about new conquests. :)

Geez neilio, you act like it's not already the best file browser.. If it weren't, it wouldn't have gotten out the crowbar to open my wallet and pay for it. :D Starving students and all of that.

Maybe you can work something out with St. Clair SW (makers of Default Folder X) to have the open / save display the pathfinder shelves :D

I've just asked Jon at St. Clair software about this, and I'll report back with what he says. I have a feeling it would be somewhat difficult (or even impossible) for DF to hack the display of the open / save dialogues, but you never know.
One other thing we're trying to figure out is if it's possible for PF to actually update the O/S dialogues itself with the Shelf items. That also is still a possibility...

Even if it displayed the shelves in a poup menu of one of the buttons on the side, I would consider that acceptable.

I agree!
I really liked Action Files under 9; I especially miss 'sort by Kind' in the fileselectors...I don't like this jumbled mess of files and folders that are not sorted (folders first, files afterwards)...
