Renaming files

I was renaming some files last night, and I saw that when I start to type a new name or append a suffix to the existing name, the text block goes white and the insertion point is at the far right of the text block. When I hit Enter or return, whatever I've typed is there, exactly as I typed it. It's good that it works, but I can't see what I've typed, and I'm a sight typist. Does this happen to anyone else?
