View Full Version : Moving a large number of files extraordanarily slow...

trying to put @ 900 jpgs in the trash for example and Pathfinder takes forever. Using the finder, the move is almost instantaneous. This is on my Dual 2.0 G5. It's as if PathFinder was slowly rewriting all the files instead of just readdressing them. I do have the Finder off per the plist settings, but the operation takes just as long with the Finder running.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I haven't seen this. Is it possible you might have a permissions issue that's causing the problem? Are the files being moved to the trash, or deleted outright?

That's strange. One of the things that sold me on PF so fast was that it moves files/folders to the trash much faster than the Finder. In fact, Finder was so slow for me that it was immeasurably faster for me to use Terminal to move, copy or delete files/folders. Of course, this is on a 500 MHz Pismo <insert farther disclaimer here>.

The files are eventually moved to the trash. I'm experiencing this as I type. (beach ball on hover over a PathFinder window, one by one appearance of items in the trash.) I agree that Pathfinder is faster than the Finder, that's one of the things I like about it too. I don't think I'm experiencing normal behavior. I shall try a preferences delete and than a reinstall.

OK, I've dumped the preferences and reinstalled. Still experiencing this behavior. I get "application not responding." If I wait long enough the operation will complete but I'm locked out of PathFinder in the meantime. A reinstall didn't help either nor did repairing permissions.

Any suggestions?

I'm wondering if you have journeling turned on? Maybe that slows the delete operation down while it's making a record of the process for recovery purposes???

The G5's use serial ATA - maybe a low-level driver is buggy in OS X?

Just some random thoughts, HTH.

I'm having that same problem. Twice weekly I have to juggle, upload and eventually delete 500 or so JPEGs. PF3.X has always done this operation very slowly on my MDD 1.42 system. Previous versions didn't have the problem. I do have Journaling turned on, but PF has no problem deleting just a few files and, of course, the Finder can delete as many as I want in a flash.

I've sent a bug report into CocoaTech and also emailed Steve personally about this, but that was weeks ago and I never heard anything back. I'd certainly like it if this were fixed soon.
