View Full Version : Question regarding Terminal

The terminal drawer doesn't use my ~/.bash_profile. This seems to be an error. Is there a workaround (other than sourcing it myself)?
I am running Panther 10.3.1 and Path Finder 3.0.1.
TIA,

Hm. My file seems to be working fine, but I really don't know tons about the inner workings of command line config files.
My bash config file is called .bashrc.

But the correct answer is to read .bash_profile (at least on a stock Panther installation). Is there a way we can set this up to work correctly? (Otherwise a vast number of environment variables that I have set up for development are being ignored.)
Thanks

create a login script some thing like:
login -fp username
source ~/.bashrc (or whatever login script you want)
then in configure pathfinder preferences to run the new script when starting a new session.
Make sure to set the executable bit on the new script.

It sounds like you have some familiarity with scripting. Do know if there's a way to script Path Finder's preferences to hide and reveal the desktop files?
Thanks

bjast, are you looking for a toggle to hide and reveal the desktop items? One thing you could do is assign a hot key combination to the "Hide / Show Path Finder Desktop" menu item using the menu key editor. Both of these are under the Path Finder application menu.
I just did a test and assigned control + command + d to Hide / Show Path FInder desktop and the quick key toggled the visibility of the desktop as expected.

Thanks for the suggestion. Sounds like just what I'm looking for. However, I'm having a hard time finding the feature you mentioned in the Menu Key Editor. I must be missing something.

Unfortunately, I'm stilll now finding the menu item you mention above. I'm sure I'm missing something, can you help me find it?
Thanks

Took me a bit of poking around, but I got it to work. First, I opened the Menu Key Editor and after about five minutes finally managed to see the "Hide Path Finder Desktop" item under the Path Finder menu heading. OK, set it to cmd-ctr-d. No joy. Try cmd-ctr-s. Works. But, I see no difference with it toggled on or off. OK, let's quit the Finder. Still no difference. OK, open the Desktop Preferences pane. Ah-ha! Desktop background is set to transparent and nothing is set to show on the desktop - no wonder I'm not seeing anything when it's toggled on. Set background to "picture" and select all the options in the "Show on Desktop" frame.
Now when I hit cmd-ctr-s, the desktop *does* toggle on and off.

That's it!
I'm not sure how I missed it, but there it is and it's working now.
Thanks
