I realize that the shelf in Finder is limited in it's usage such that it only has 1 shelf, but I find it neccessary to update the Finder shelf simply because I use it in the open / save box. I think it would be really cool if Finder's shelf could be updated so that it listed the names of the shelves in pathfinder, which pointed to a folder containing aliases for the items in that shelf.

For example:
If in Pathfinder I have 2 shelves containing this:
Project 1
•images
•code

Project 2
•photos
•music

I would like to have Finder's shelf updated to have:
•Project 1
•Project 2

And when I click on one in Finder (or open / save), it takes me to a hidden folder that is created by PathFinder that contains aliases for the contents of the shelf.
Example:
When I click on Project 1, I naviagate to a folder containing aliases for:
•images
•code

I was simply going to suggest having one 'blessed' shelf in Pathfinder that linked to the Finder's sidebar, but I prefer this solution, I think. Either way, this would be tremendously helpful.

Is there any way to convince PathFinder to use the same shelf as the normal Finder / the standard Open dialog? It seems like a serious problem that PathFinder has its own custom shelf that other applications do not use.

It might be possible to parse the Finder's Places settings - I'll see what Steve thinks is doable.

That would actually be my prefered option :D

It would be great if it was possible for PF to access the Finder's sidebar and offer an option to display it (minus the volumes) in the shelf.

I keep running the Finder, usually with no window open, but when a third party application opens a Finder window, I'd want its sidebar to be in sync with PF's shelf. The option to read and edit the Finder's sidebar from PF would allow it. And it would be particularly handy when PF is compatible with the Finder's smart folders, too.

Since the Finder uses sidebar items in Open/Save dialog boxes how would any PF shelf integration deal with that?

If PF simply accessed the Finder's sidebar, its shelf would always be in synch with the Open/Save dialogs' sidebar in every applications. Add a folder to the shelf in PF, and it ends up in the Finder and in the navigation service dialogs too. Add it from the Finder, and the result is the same.

syncing the shelf with the Finder's sidedbar would solve most of my life's problems

Wow :) If it only could do the same for me.... :)

This is the missing feature that keeps me from buying and using Path Finder. I want the sidebar in my Finder (or Finder replacement) to match the sidebar in the Open/Save dialog boxes. I see that this poll started four years ago -- is this feature in any recent releases of PF, or has any thought been given to implementing this as a feature?

What might work in the meantime is for Path Finder to build a special folder (perhaps in the Application Support folder or wherever) that has subfolders for all the shelves, each with aliases for the items in their respective shelves. Then all we have to do is add that special folder to the sidebar in the finder, and boom: all open and save dialogs have our path finder shelves easily accessible.

I see this as being a solution that works nearly as well, and would be much simpler for the devs to do, eh?
