Editing the com.apple.loginwindow.plist file still seems to work fine for me - I've been running PF for quite some time now under 10.3 as a replacement for the Finder with no real problems.
Get the deets on the Cocoatech FAQs (http://www.cocoatech.com/faqs.php#replace) page.

I'll give that a shot again. It hadn't initially worked for me under 10.3.1 (and others IIRC).
thanks

FYI: It would not work for me and my local preferences. I had to modify the global ones under /Library, not ~/Library.

Strange. I just moved my PF location yesterday (I originally had it in a subfolder of my applications folder, and moved it to the top level of the Applications folder), updated the com.apple.loginwindow.plist in my ~/Library/Preferences, and it all still works just fine.
How did you install Panther? Mine was an archive and install.

I have Path Finder.app in /Applications/Utilities/
I just use the 2 checkboxes in the Preferences
-Start Path Finder at login
-Automatically quit the Finder at login
How is editing thedefaults any different?
